Travis,A worship leeadr I am not, but I am one who LOVES to worship the Lord through music! Two songs immediately came to my mind when I read this post. They are probably real old school but this year they have been a great blessing to us in our worship time at Bible study. One, I believe, might be categorized as a southern gospel song and it is called Get All Excited . The woman who plays it on the piano for us only plays by ear, but what an ear she has. It is so upbeat and easy to sing and EVERY time she plays it, I truly do get all excited! The other one is All Things Are Possible . In fact, each week as I drive the half hour to Bible study, I play it over and over and by the time I pull into the church parking lot, I am pumped and ready.

Worship does not have anything to do with being comfortable with a race, culture, setting or style. What comforts did John need present on the island of Patmos when he recieved the Revelation regarding the end times. He worship to the point of being caught up in to the third heaven. He did not have any of the things that we think are necessary to be comfortable in worship. All he had was JESUS. I dont have a problem with where we have progressed to. But lets not be so stuck on ourselves until we forget JESUS. When he's the focus race, culture, style, stage, lights dont matter.

An interesting study is how many worship leaders who are signed are of certain colours.
There may not be among the local church but if you surveyed every album you may find a problem
As in if you looked at every christian album you may find it
From a biblical perspective there should not be but that does not mean that there is

Revelation 5:9 KJV
And they sung a new song, saying , Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain , and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

The problem may more be content and theology issues aswell as that would be another issue

Clearly the answer is 'no' - worship cannot have a racism problem. However, people involved in worship - leaders, musicians, worshippers etc - can. The question itself shows that we have very much turned worship into an activity, or even worse an industry or an institution.

I think you need to explain more what you mean by racism in worship.

If you mean because there is a black guy leading worship and some of the white congregation zone out just because he's black then yes, it's a problem. If as Lochman suggests it's a cultural thing then that is not racism, we each express our worship in a way that is familiar and comfortable to us. In the same way an 80 year old woman will express her worship very differently to a teanager who likes the latest Hillsong United.

Someone suggested that most of worship songs are written in English. I'm not sure that is true. We are exposed to the English ones because of our culture and experience. In other countries there are some great worshppers and the African churches are a great example of this. Just because they may not have sound systems and electric guitars doesn't mean there is a racism issue. God enjoys their worship just as much as the best prepared and highly polished worship led by Matt Redman etc. (perhaps even more!).
Worship is an attitude of the heart and racism may be a problem with some but I think the bigger issue is, do we worship with heart, mind, body and soul, with our whole lives as God has called us to do?

My closest friend is South African and refers to herself as coloured South African. I am British and we worship together closely in our worship team. We are sisters in Christ. My experience is that I love the way my black friends worship because they know how to let God in. God sees our heart not the colour of our skin. He made us all in his own image.
